Shelters Teacher's Manual (Pilot Edition) (digital PDF download)
Shelters Unit — Pilot Edition
Outdoor Survival: Applied Wilderness Skills
Grades 6–10 | A Pathfinder Learning Curriculum
The Shelters Teacher's Manual (digital PDF download) is a hands-on outdoor survival curriculum designed for middle school and early high school students. Through real-world shelter problems, students learn how humans use materials, insulation, structure, and environmental awareness to protect themselves from heat, cold, wind, and precipitation.
Students construct and test multiple shelter systems including lean-to shelters, tripod shelters, ridgeline shelters, bivy shelters, and hammocks while applying concepts from engineering, environmental science, geography, and heat transfer. Lessons emphasize outdoor problem solving, collaboration, design thinking, and practical skill development.
Designed for use during the school day, the curriculum combines direct instruction with structured outdoor activities and performance-based learning experiences. Most lessons include approximately 30–45 minutes of instruction followed by extended outdoor application and construction activities.
