Tools Unit — Pilot Edition

Outdoor Survival: Applied Wilderness Skills
Grades 6–10 | A Pathfinder Learning Curriculum

The Tools Teacher's Manual (digital PDF download) is a hands-on outdoor survival curriculum designed for middle school and early high school students. Through real-world toolmaking and bushcraft challenges, students learn how humans use tools, carving, cordage, and material knowledge to solve practical survival problems.

Students safely use and maintain knives, carve functional wooden objects, create cordage from improvised and natural materials, and develop foundational woodworking and bushcraft skills. Lessons emphasize engineering design, craftsmanship, responsibility, problem solving, and real-world application through structured outdoor learning experiences.

Designed for use during the school day, the curriculum combines direct instruction with hands-on outdoor activities and performance-based learning. Most lessons include approximately 30–45 minutes of instruction followed by extended skill practice and outdoor application activities.

The pilot edition includes six core lessons:

  • Knife Safety
  • Carve a Tent Stake
  • Carve a Utensil
  • Toilet Paper Cordage
  • Natural Fiber Cordage
  • Try Stick

The unit culminates in a hands-on challenge in which students design and build primitive fishing gear using the skills developed throughout the unit.
